Ornstein claims Chelsea “spoke to” coveted manager who is now heading to their rivals

It looks very much like Arne Slot is going to be the new Liverpool manager.

Things have been progressing in that direction all week, and today the man himself has openly admitted that he wants to join the Reds, and that his club Feyenoord are in negotiations about releasing him to become Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Anfield.

If you want to know more about the Dutchman who will be leading the Reds against our Blues next season, you can check out the Athletic’s podcast on the subject, available here.

One interesting moment comes from David Ornstein, who mentions the teams that Slot has been in talks with.

He was close to joining Tottenham last summer according to the top insider, we knew that, and there were also rumoured talks with Leeds which Ornstein mentions.

But there was one connection we hadn’t heard of before – with Chelsea.

“He’s shown his qualities… he spoke to Chelsea, last summer, as well,” Ornstein revealed. That’s a new one to us, a year ago all we heard about was Julien Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, and eventual winner of the race, Mauricio Pochettino.

Of course his appointment also has more immediate knock on effects for Chelsea. If he does indeed to go Liverpool, that means they’re out of the race for any other coaches we might be interested in. Ruben Amorim was favourite to make that move until this late development, and he might now be a tempting option should Pochettino not survive these final weeks.

We’re still not quite why Liverpool have shied away from the Portuguese coach – given their record it’s enough to make you think twice – but if we really do collapse in these final fixtures you can bet he will be high up on our list as a candidate to take over from Pochettino.
