Chelsea would need £50m offer to consider selling Barcelona one of their promising signings – opinion

An interesting new transfer rumours has popped up tonight- the idea that Carney Chukwuemeka is interesting Barcelona.

TalkSport are reporting that the Catalan club were keen on the 20 year old when he was still a teenager at Aston Villa, before he made the switch to Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2022.

Since then it’s been a few bright flashes from the midfielder with far too many injuries in between. Supporters are always keen to see him on the pitch, but the coaches in charge have been reluctant so far, and there’s been a lot of time out hurt.

We can see why Barcelona would like him though – he glides over the pitch and makes the difference in the final third too. We can well see him fitting into a modern Barca team, using his bigger frame to his advantage in La Liga and potentially shining even brighter than Ruben Loftus-Cheek has in Serie A.

A few bridges too far

This whole thing doesn’t sound very realistic, simply because of Barcelona’s current financial situation. They’re really not in a position to be buying players from anyone, let alone ones which are going to cost big money.

Chelsea are in a similar, if slightly less restrictive bind. They need to sell before they buy, but selling players bought in the last couple of years makes no sense for them financially, unless they get a major bump on what they paid – which isn’t possible here.

If a team came in and offered, say, £50m for Chukwuemeka, Chelsea would probably sell. Given Barcelona aren’t likely to even be able to offer what we paid two years ago (around £20m), there’s no way we would accept.

What matters now is getting Carney back on the pitch and playing. He will have the perfect opportunity for that tomorrow night against Arsenal.
