Is Willian Chelsea’s No.10?

Jose Mourinho made it pretty clear that Oscar will be his No.10 at the start of the season and that his team will be built around him.

Questions were raised when Mourinho benched Chelsea’s two-time player of the year Juan Mata, who was Chelsea No.10 in the past two seasons. However, Jose was spot-on about Oscar on that role and his tactics didn’t really suit Mata which led to his departure.

OscarÂ’s superb form at the beginning of the season was a clear indication that he is the man to take the No.10 position. But after analysing the season so far, I can say that Willian is a much more suitable player for that role and here is the reason why.

Despite playing fewer games than Oscar in that position (in Premier League), Willian creates 3.6 chances per game compared to his teammate who has managed just 1.5 chances per game.

Oscar, having started 21 games in that attacking position, has managed to grab just one assist and five goals, while Willian started in five matches has one goal to his name.

If we look at the season as a whole, WillianÂ’s 48 chances created is only topped by Eden Hazard. Oscar, having played nine games more, has managed just 43.

Willian has completed 31 dribbles in the Premier League this season, while Oscar has managed 23, and WillianÂ’s defensive contribution is second to none having made 16 interceptions compared to Oscar who has made just seven.

Since Juan Mata left, Oscar’s form has dipped and has been a shadow of the player that started the season so well. I think it’s time Willian took that role to prove why he deserves that position more than Oscar. It’s also worth mentioning that Chelsea is yet to drop any points when Willian has started in that role.
