Why Drogba’s Return Won’t Damage His Chelsea Legacy

“He may never play for Chelsea again, he will never be forgotten”. The famous words by Martin Tyler after Didier Drogba slotted his penalty past Manuel Neuer to win the Holy Grail, the Champions League for Chelsea.

Mr Tyler was right, the fans always remembered their big man from the Ivory Coast, but in recent weeks the news emerged that he WILL make an emotional return to Stamford Bridge.

The majority of fans were happy with the way Drogba had finished his Chelsea career that night in Munich, winning them what they had been craving for years – the biggest prize in European Football.

But would a return really damage his legacy? Not in my opinion. Whatever happens during his second stint at Stamford Bridge, no one will ever forget what he did for the club in its most successful period.

One poor performance, one poor pass or shot won’t overshadow 157 goals, one Champions League trophy, three Premier League titles and four FA Cups. His legacy is untouchable.

Drogba will mainly focus on mentoring young players. He will also be an important figure in ChelseaÂ’s dressing room following the departure of club legends Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole.

Costa will undoubtedly be ChelseaÂ’s number one striker next season and Drogba knows that. He wants to be part of the clubÂ’s future, whether that is as a part-time player or as a coach.

It wouldnÂ’t be a surprise if he ended up with a coaching role in the academy once he hangs up his boots for good. He is an inspiration to many young footballers and knows what this club is all about.

The Return of the King is well and truly happening.
