Official: Agreement reached for Filipe Luis transfer

Chelsea and Atlético Madrid have today agreed a deal that will see left-back Filipe Luis move to West London, the clubs have confirmed.

Talks have been ongoing between the clubs after Ashley Cole announced his departure from the Blues at the end of last season.

Luis is highly regarded in world football as one of the best full-backs around, and the 28 year old helped Atlético to a stunning La Liga win last season, as well as a Championss League final runners up place.

However, after a fee believed to be around £20 million was agreed between the clubs, Atletico announced on their Twitter account that Luis was set to sign for the Blues, subject to personal terms, which are expected to be agreed today or this week.

Atlético said on their official website:

Atlético Madrid and Chelsea have reached an agreement to transfer the rights of Filipe Luis, pending the medical with the English club.

“The Brazilian footballer had told our club at the end of the campaign his willingness to join the London entity.”

Later, Chelsea also confirmed that an agreement had been reached for the transfer of Luis, who has spent four seasons at Madrid before his move.

The left back will add quality and experience to Mourinho’s side as they go in the hunt for silverware after a trophyless season last term.

Stat: With 107, Filipe Luis won more tackles than any other defender in La Liga last season.

Luis will become Chelsea’s third major signing of the summer after the acquisitions of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa, the latter also from Atlético Madrid.
