Mourinho: “I let Lampard leave for future of Chelsea”

Jose Mourinho shed light on Frank Lampards departure and explained why he let the Chelsea Legend leave Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard left the club at the end of last season as a free agent after contract extension talks broke down. He joined New York City FC, who happen to be owned by Manchester City and thats where he ended up in the summer after they took him on loan. Much to the heart ache of Blue fans Lampard equalised to earn City a draw when we went to the Etihad earlier in the season, despite his goal, he still received a standing ovation from the travelling Londoners.

But Jose Mourinho has defended his and the clubs decision to let Frank go and claims it was for the future of the club and not a blunder, after Lampard continues to get results for Manchester City.

“It’s his life, nothing to do with us. He left Chelsea as a free agent and chooses his life, we can’t complain about it. That’s football. My view is that when you want to look forward, look for the future and have people like Fabregas, Matic and Oscar, which are the next 10 years of the club, not the next year, that we made the right decision.”

He went on to add; after people questioned bringing Didier Drogba back to the club and keeping John Terry on as no different to the option of keeping Frank Lampard.

“You can argue ‘you have John Terry and Didier Drogba’. Different. Didier Drogba is a striker that is coming to help and support. John Terry is the best central defender in English football and it doesn’t matter how old he is. The nucleus of the team that has to be developed, if you have a big player like Frank it would stop the development of the other guys.”

Frank Lampard was due to cross the pond to New York at the end of December but City manager Manuel Pellegrini wants to keep him at the club for what seems like the rest of the season.

And why not? Lampard has been a big part of Manchester City’s season so far, scoring vital goals and helping City catch Chelsea in the race for the title.

But having that been the case, was Jose right in letting him go?

As a Legend of the club it would have been wonderful to see him stay but like Mourinho said we need to look to the future and with an abundance of talent in central midfield, where would Super Frank really fit into our new look side?
