Courtois calls on Cech to stay

The 22 year old was chosen ahead of Petr Cech to start on Monday night against Burnley, but the Belgian youngster has called on the Czech International goalkeeper to stay at Chelsea.

“I want him to stay. Even if he doesn’t play he can be a lot of help to me in training”, said Courtois, who gave an commanding performance on his debut in Chelsea’s opening 3-1 victory.

I can still learn from him because he has a lot of experience, he can give me good tips about the Premier League, things I might not know at the start.

“He is nice to me. We are training very well and he is still proving he is a great goalkeeper”.

For the team it is better for us to have two good goalkeepers. I don’t have a problem is he stays.

Petr Cech would be an incredible mentor to have in aiding the development of Courtois, but with club legends Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard having already moved on this summer in search of pastures new, Cech is unlikely to be satisfied with playing second fiddle, fighting for his place from the bench.

This season provides the first real piece of meaningful competition Cech has faced since arriving in 2004. Ross Turnbull, Hilario and Mark Schwarzer not proving much of a threat to his position.

Courtois is already aware of the standards he must keep performing at to maintain his spot in the starting XI.

Always when you are here you have pressure to perform because you are playing in a top team.

“There is always a pressure to win games and to be important and I am trying to do that in every game that I play”.

Courtois went on to say “Hopefully I play well and stay in the team”.

There is no doubt Jose Mourinho would love to have both goalkeepers in his squad, but at 32 Petr Cech still has plenty to give. The stats for the 2013/14 season between Cech and Courtois in La Liga were practically identical.

Mourinho has already made it clear that he is building to make Chelsea a dominant force over the next decade, which makes it clear who he sees as his number one. Mourinho is not new to having to make big goalkeeping decisions, having replaced Carlo Cudicini with Petr Cech when he first arrived in English football. He also made the decision to replace Real Madrid captain, Iker Casillas with Diego Lopez.

Whether Cech decides to fight for his place or head for a new challenge remains to be seen. Less than two weeks are left of the transfer window, French teams PSG and Monaco have been linked with him over the past few days, along with Real Madrid who have already secured the services of Costa Rican World Cup star Keylor Navas
