Chelsea target signs new deal

Atletico Madrid’s Thiago Mendes has signed a new deal to keep him at the Spanish giants for another two years, ending speculation of a move to Chelsea this summer.

The 33 year-old was released by Atletico at the end of last season, after serving a4 and a half year spell with the club: “I felt proud because we had had an incredible season, but I had thought it was the right time for the cycle to come to an end”. – Sky Sports

The defensive midfielder was heavily linked with a move back to the Bridge this summer, after a previous one year spell under Mourinho, which ended in the summer of 2005.

Thiago had a successful spell at the Blues, and his form in La Liga this season – which saw Atletico win the league – had impressed many clubs across Europe: “I have been offered the chance to play in various international leagues and have taken some time to evaluate my options during the summer, but my final decision became clearer, and Atletico was the only option.” – Sky Sports

The new deal ends the possibility of Thiago retuning to the Premier League club, where it was likely he would replace John Obi Mikel in the midfield.
