Chelsea 6-0 NK Maribor – Superb Chelsea run riot

Chelsea ran riot to claim their biggest ever Champions League win with a 6-0 win over minnows Maribor, the highlights being a late double for Eden Hazard and Didier Drogba goal that was naturally emotionally-charged for the Stamford Bridge crowd.

The Blues were unable to quite match the seven Bayern Munich and Shaktar Donetsk claimed tonight but were still outstanding and ruthless. Loic Remy opened the scoring, Drogba claimed a trademark penalty, John Terry made it three before half time, whilst an own goal and a Hazard double completed the scoring.

Chelsea were far too good for Maribor side who did claim creditable draws with Schalke and Sporting Lisbon, and the first half success was built on two Blues legends, as goals from Drogba and Terry gave their team control. Chelsea attacked with quality, showing precise passing and incisive attacking movement, and Mourinho has also got his side working hard.

Eden Hazard embodies this spirit, and was technically superb, constantly outwitting the Maribor defence whilst also doing his defensive duties. Willian and Oscar followed suit, whilst Fabregas ran the game from deep and Terry was imperious at the back.

This was a ruthless performance one would expect of champions and on this basis the Blues look a team capable of going right to the end of the competition this year.

Oscar had an early penalty appeal rejected, though the Blues soon led as Terry assisted remy, who smashed a left-footed shot home, but was injured in the act.

Drogba charged on to replace Remy and soon afterwards scored his first Chelsea goal since the Champions League final, a penalty after a handball following a swift attack.

The third came from a destructive counter-attacking run from Hazard, setting up Terry, who slid home to the delight of the crowd.

Chelsea were ruthless in claiming more goals thereafter when other sides would have relaxed, and claimed a fortunate fourth when Viler scored an own goal after good work from Hazard. To cap his night off the poor lad was immediately substituted.

Ibraimi joined him on the bench after being removed for missing a penalty after he was fouled by Matic. Meanwhile Mourinho rested Fabregas and Oscar for promising youngsters Solanke and Ake.

The substitutions did not disrupt the rhythm of the Blues, as Willian crashed a drive against and Hazard made it five from the spot after Suler fouled Ivanovic. This became six when the Belgian doubled his tally, controlling Ake’s pass before a deft turn and a precise right-footed finish. Hazard nearly completed a rapid hat-trick but the Blues will be delighted with six goals in a performance of champions.
