Champions League Draw: Chelsea handed a lucky draw

Chelsea have been drawn in Group G in today’s Champions League draw for the coming season.

Mourinho’s side will face Shalke, Sporting Lisbon and Maribor as they begin their road to the Berlin final next May.

The draw took place in Monaco this evening and, on the whole, has been very kind the Chelsea in handing them a group that they should progress from with ease.

Shalke are based in Germany, Sporting Lisbon from Portugal while Chelsea will travel to Slovenia to play Maribor.

Chelsea have never faced either Maribor or Sporting Lisbon in a competitive match.

The Blues did face Shalke last season as they progressed from Group E with 12 points.

This season’s draw is even kinder than the last as Chelsea are drawn against teams that shouldn’t provide too much competition.

Chelsea did however fail to progress from the Group Stages two seasons ago, whilst being the holders of the competition.

Man City were handed a much harder draw, as they face Bayern Munich, AS Roma and CSKA Moscow.

Liverpool will play the holders Real Madrid, Basel and new boys Lodogorets.

Finally, Arsenal face the hostile atmospheres of Dortmund and Galatasaray. They also face Belgian side Anderlecht.

The Champions League group stages begin on the 16th of September.

Stat: Chelsea have won their last six games in Europe against Portuguese sides, each by a single goal. (Opta)
