Ian Maatsen’s dad has taken a swipe at Chelsea claiming a lot at the club “revolves around money” following his son’s move to Borussia Dortmund.
The 22-year-old signed a new contract with a £35m release clause in January before joining the Bundesliga outfit for the second half of the season.
Having impressed in pre season the Dutchman might have expected more opportunities but was limited to just 15 appearances, with only one Premier League start.
Mauricio Pochettino preferred to use Levi Colwill out of position, rather than give Maatsen a run at left back following injuries to Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella.
Maatsen’s dad hits out at Chelsea
Following his arrival at Dortmund Maatsen has quickly established himself as a key player for the club, playing an important role in the Champions League quarter final victory over Atletico Madrid.
The left back is currently preparing for Wednesday night’s Champions League semi final first leg against Paris Saint Germain, and his dad has confirmed Maatsen wants to make his move to Germany to permanent.
“We are working on staying at the club [Dortmund]”, he told Dutch outlet Voetbal International.
“The clubs have to fight it out among themselves. Ian is developing well here and things are not going well at Chelsea since they changed ownership.
“A lot at that club also revolves around money, which sometimes seems more important than the club’s interests.
“We have more options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund has proven to be a good restart. And look which guys come from there, [Jude] Bellingham, [Erling] Haaland.”
Maatsen returned to Chelsea last summer following a successful loan spell at Burnley, where he won the title under Vincent Kompany and was named in the Championship team of the year.
The Dutchman turned down a permanent move to Turf Moor in the summer despite Chelsea and Burnley agreeing a deal worth £31.5m.
It appears Maatsen has made his final appearance in a Chelsea shirt and his future lies away from the club.
