“It moved me” – Former Blue shares thoughts on fan favourites farewell message

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton says the farewell video posted by the departing Thiago Silva shows his “deep attachment” to the club.

Silva announced on Monday in an emotional video message he would be leaving Stamford Bridge after four seasons at the club, having joined on a free transfer from PSG in 2020.

The Brazilian was a key part of the side that won the club’s second Champions League title in 2021, and helped Chelsea to their first Club World Cup win.

The 39-year-old has forged a deep bond with the club and it’s supporters, and how much Chelsea means to him was shown through his emotional video message.

Chris Sutton moved by Silva’s farewell video

Ex-Blue Sutton was discussing the Brazil international and the emotion he felt when watching the video saying it “moved” him.

“I watched it and he was very emotional in it”,  Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club.

Silva announced he would be leaving Chelsea in an emotional video message on Monday.

“It moved me, the stuff about his boys playing for the club and that attachment.

“Footballers do get a certain reputation of not caring. I’d urge anybody to watch it, it’s really emotional.

“This is a player who has had a stellar career.

“I suspect when he moved to Chelsea most people thought he was just coming to London to ease his career out. It’s been anything but. He’s a model professional.

“It was a really compelling watch, nice to see and nice to hear.

“He has not ruled out going back in a coaching capacity. He clearly has a deep attachment, I didn’t realise he had that attachment to the club.”

Silva himself admitted he only planned to stay at Stamford Bridge for a year following his arrival as a 36-year-old, but has ended up staying until just shy of his 40th birthday.

The veteran defender has five games left in a Chelsea shirt starting with Thursday night’s London derby against Tottenham, and Silva is reportedly going to be named captan for the final game of the season against Bournemouth.
