“Could be terrific” – talkSPORT pundit shares thoughts on Chelsea’s forgotten man

Chelsea have endured another difficult campaign, and one contributing factor is the amount of injuries the Blues have suffered.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men currently sit ninth in the Premier League with just five games remaining, and are in danger of missing out on European football for the second consecutive season.

The Blues have been without key players for large parts of the campaign with captain Reece James limited to just eight appearances, whilst Christopher Nkunku has only started two Premier League games, and Wesley Fofana hasn’t appeared at all.

It’s hard not to imagine what might have happened had Chelsea not been without so many key players for large parts of the campaign.

Whilst the likes of Nkunku and James are in with a chance of featuring before the end of the season, Fofana isn’t expected back until next season.

Despite not being able to contribute this season Jeff Stelling still believes the Frenchman can have an impact long term, having watched the defender at Leicester City.

Stelling was discussing Fofana and his team-mate Levi Colwill, and told talkSPORT:

“He [Colwill] is a good player, isn’t he? We forget Wesley Fofana as well. Wes Fofana was outstanding at Leicester.

“He has been injury-plagued since he arrived at Chelsea, but he too could be terrific as far as the future of Chelsea are concerned.”

Fofana is somewhat of a forgotten man at Stamford Bridge, but the 23-year-old is one of the club’s most expensive signings at £70m.

It will be interesting to see what role Fofana plays next season, but you would expect given the money spent, he will be given the opportunities to show he deserves to part of Chelsea’s first choice defensive pairing.

The former Leicester man has been limited by injuries to just 20 appearances for the Blues since joining in the summer of 2022.

Next season is massive for Fofana and he really needs to stay fit and kickstart his Chelsea career.
