Diego Costa needs surgery

Reports have surfaced tonight that striker Diego Costa will soon need a hamstring operation.

Neil Ashton of the Daily Mail revealed on NBCSN’s Premier League Live that the 26-year old’s hamstring injury will eventually need to be operated on.

That would keep him out of action for approximately six weeks, however, he doesnÂ’t need to have the operation yet.

The former Atletico Madrid hitman was infamously subbed off in the 7th minute of last season’s Champions League final, after starting the game ‘not 100%’.

I recall Michael Owen, one of the greatest strikers ever to grace the Premier League, speak about hamstrings whilst commentating on BT Sport, shortly after Kevin Mirallas injured his. He said something along the lines of ‘once it’s gone, it takes an age to recover’.

This is what Costa’s situation appears to be. Every week there are doubts about his fitness, and now it seems he has played one to many times.

Jose Mourinho is said to want the surgery to take place during the next international break, with Chelsea holding a comfortable lead at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

Costa is receiving treatment everyday at Chelsea, ‘barely training’ according to his Portuguese manager. The Brazilian-cum-Spaniard has been pictured in training with the rest of his teammates today, however, after being left out of the squad that faced Manchester United yesterday.

One has to presume that the sooner Costa receives his surgery the better, but with the striker having played seven games and scoring nine goals in the league can we afford for him to be out for a prolonged period of time?
