Diego Costa to Chelsea Officially Announced

Since that fateful kick by Didier Drogba in Munich went past Manuel Neuer on the 19th of May 2012, Chelsea FC fans have been hungry for a high profile striker to come in and replace the Blues legend.

Today Chelsea FC announced that Mourinho’s main summer target Diego Costa’s release clause of a reported £32m had been met and that the Atlético Madrid striker would be making the switch to the Premier League club for next season.

Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atlético Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa, with Chelsea meeting the buy-out clause for the Spanish international.

Fans have voiced certain concerns due to his display as part of the Spanish side that were knocked out of this summer’s World Cup after only two matches. However surely his injury suffered at the end of the club season was still hampering his overall condition.

Comparisons about his lack of production for a tika-taka Spanish side should not be compared with that of the success he has achieved with his club in a more direct approach to attack. Service from the wings is not a usual tactic for Spain and they looked unwilling to convert their attack to suit the style Costa thrives in.

Had it not been for his injury who knows what could have been for Costa and Spain at this summer’s World Cup. What Chelsea fans should not be concerned about is his lack of goals in a similar set up to what Jose Mourinho installed at Chelsea last season.

In comparison last season the Chelsea forward trio of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba, and Samuel Eto’o (announced his departure today after 1 season) managed to produce 31 goals in all competitions. In a similar system Costa managed to score 36 in all competitions by himself.

What will remain to be seen is how Costa will react to the the defenses in the Premier League and whether his shaky temperament will rear its ugly head. Chelsea fans will hope that he is the final piece of the puzzle that the team has been lacking to help them regain domestic and European glory.
