Why Loic Remy to Chelsea makes sense

There is no denying that Chelsea need to reinforce their attacking line-up this summer. QPR striker Loic Remy is the latest player linked with the club amid rumours that he is ready to snub Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham for the Blues.

Remy could turn out to be a valuable signing for Chelsea, having spent this season on loan at Newcastle United, scoring 14 goals in the Premier League. That is five more than any Chelsea striker managed and a tally only Eden Hazard matched.

The French striker has scored 20 goals in 40 appearances since moving to the Premier League in 2012/13, meaning he has managed to grab a goal in every two games. That is the same amount that Fernando Torres and Demba Ba have managed to score combined during this period. Chelsea could use his goal scoring instinct, which is something they lack from the current crop of strikers.

On a financial point of view, this move makes perfect sense since Remy has a buy-out clause of £8 million. A player with his credibility for that price can only be a bargain for Chelsea because of the Financial Fair Play regulations.

Loic Remy has settled in well to the Premier League, becoming the top scorer for Newcastle United this season and for QPR the season before that, despite playing just 14 games for them.

In terms of passing, no Chelsea striker comes close to Remy. He made 583 passes in the Premier League this season, 471 of which were completed. That is a success percentage of 81 percent. Remy’s creativity is also impressive, and he made 27 key passes, more than any Chelsea striker (including Romelu Lukaku).

Only Fernando Torres has been fouled more times than Remy this season among the Chelsea strikers. However, the French striker has completed 48% of his dribbles; a tally only Lukaku can match.

Remy’s defensive contribution is also superb, having made four interceptions including eight tackles. Only Samuel Eto’o has won more tackles. He also made seven clearances this season, but committed 24 fouls in the process.

Remy is a very different player than the current strikers in Mourinho’s disposal. He is a proven goalscorer and despite Chelsea making a move for Diego Costa, signing Remy could be vital for the Blues next season.
