Chelsea close in on Brazilian

Chelsea’s pursuit of Brazilian left-back Felipe Luis is said to be drawing to a close. The La Liga star is considered to be one of the best full-backs in Europe and José Mourinho is now willing to trigger his ÂŁ20 million release clause.

With Ashley Cole apparently leaving the club, the Blues are in need of an established left-back. Though Cesar Azpilicueta has performed admirably on the wrong side of the defence, his services would be better suited to his natural right side.

Chelsea have options in Patrick van Aanholt and Ryan Bertrand, who had been sent on loan this season to Vitesse and Aston Villa respectively, though neither is considered capable as of yet to step up and fill the void left by the veteran Englishman.

Felipe Luis, whose performances didn’t warrant a national team call up, has impressed throughout the season. The 28-year-old has recently stated that he wishes to see out the remainder of his contract at the Vincente Calderon. However, Mourinho is confident a £78,000-per-week deal will be enough to sway his decision.

A decorated defender and one who would likely slot straight into the first team, Felipe Luis would be the perfect replacement for outgoing David Luiz. The Atlético man will occupy a spot in defence that Mourinho couldn’t use the PSG-bound Brazilian for. Though the 27-year-old was a fan favourite, the money received from his deal will plug a number of holes in the Chelsea lineup.
